LEWISTON, Maine — Zam Zam Mohamud, described as popular and well-regarded in the community by a Bates College professor, is the city’s first Somali to serve on the Lewiston School Committee.

Her appointment is a turning point for Lewiston, “when our city representatives begin to reflect our shifting demographics,” said Elizabeth Eames, an associate professor of anthropology at Bates. Of Lewiston’s student-age population of 5,139, 23 percent are English Language Learners, the majority from Somali families.

“Zam Zam bridges all sides of the community with her charismatic personality, high-voltage energy supply, linguistic facility and multiple cultural competencies,” Eames said.

Mohamud, 38, was nominated by Mayor Robert Macdonald and approved by the City Council. She fills a spot on the committee vacated by former school Superintendent Robert Connors, who resigned for health reasons. Mohamud said she intends to serve Connors’ term until it expires in January and might seek another term after that.

A CNA at Central Maine Medical Center, Mohamud lives in Tall Pines. She isn’t rich or powerful, Eames said. Her family “lost everything in the war, they came here having to start all over again.”

Yet she’s known by many in the community. She was an engaged parent active in her children’s schools: Longley and Montello elementary schools, Lewiston Middle School and Lewiston High School. She’s often been seen volunteering, wearing a head scarf and a warm smile.

Mohamud moved to Lewiston from Atlanta, Ga., in 2001, among the first Somali refugees to arrive. She fled Somalia because of the war and lived in Kenya for 10 years, she said.

After moving to Lewiston, she and her husband divorced, leaving her to raise her son, Jama, and daughter, Hanan. Both have graduated from Lewiston High School. In 2009, her daughter served as co-class president and was the first Somali student to serve on the School Committee. Hanan is now a student at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York; Jama attends Husson University in Bangor.

When she first moved to Maine, adapting to a new culture was difficult, Mohamud said, calling the English language tough to learn. She still learns new words every day. Culture shock.

“You’ve been raised in such a way,” she said. Her children were in school all day with American students learning new ways. When her children came home from school, “you want to keep the culture, the religion. It is a challenge.”

Children will push a parent’s limits, she said. “They will try. You need to be on top of everything. It’s reinforcing, you being there as a parent with your rules and regulations to be followed, and asking God to help.”

She said she raised her children with the expectation they’d work hard and do well in school. “There’s no way out,” she said. Education was a constant topic. “I talked to the teachers, to my kids, make sure they did their homework,” Mohamud said. She hired extra tutors for her children at home. She talked about the difference college would make in their lives and took them on college visits during their sophomore years.

She went to school herself, graduating from the Central Maine Medical Center College of Nursing and Health Professions. In 2006, she became a U.S. citizen.

Mohamud has been a frequent volunteer, serving on the Lewiston Police Department’s Civil Rights Team, the library board of trustees, Mayor Larry Gilbert’s Downtown Neighborhood Task Force, the school department’s search for a new superintendent, the school-based health centers and Welcoming Maine, among other groups.

In 2011 there wasn’t enough candidates running for the school board. She was among three who stepped up and became write-in candidates for an at-large school committee seat. Mohamud came in second to Connors, 552-418.

When the mayor recently asked her to fill Connors’ spot, she agreed. “My kids went to school here,” Mohamud said. “They got the best education. This is my way to give back to this community and to support the community.”

Lewiston High School Principal W. Gus LeBlanc said he’s known Mohamud for 12 years. Her children went to Montello when he was principal there, and later attended the high school when he was principal. LeBlanc described her as a parent committed to her children and their education, a tireless volunteer on committees to help education.

“Over the years she has been an active presence at the schools, following up on the progress of her children, encouraging her children to do their very best,” LeBlanc said. “Zam Zam can be held up as a good example of a person who has become an active and productive member of the community through her dedication to others and her strong work ethic.”

Mohamud said she’s looking forward to more minorities stepping up. “We will see more city officials from the Somali community,” she said. “This is the beginning.”

A Djiboutian traitor living in Switzerland – and a spy for Eritrea. Mr. Hassan Cher Harred is Nationality Djiboutian; “Issa Odohgob Reer Galaan” same peuple who knows his father background say that he is “Gadaboursi”. He has been living in Geneva Switzerland for the last decades.

According to a close relative of His – Mr. Hassan is a spy for Eritrea – and he is under direct payroll of the Eritrean Embassy in Geneva for almost a year, now.

Mr. Hassan Cher is the cousin and close friend of Abdoul-Raham Boreh and, he has met him numerous times in secret in London and Belgium. The Djiboutian traitor was always known to be an underground member of Opposition Party but this time he’s doing his dirty job, through the USN; and he’s working hard to destabilize the Republic of Djibouti with the help of Mr. Boreh.

Based on the information obtained, Mr. Hassan was recruited by an Eritrean Woman. According to our sources she’s a close friend and a family member of Isaias Afewerki; and she’s also Hamasen tribe – the same clan of Isaias.

Eritrean government believes that Mr. Cher is the perfect man for the Job – weakening and destabilizing the Republic of Djibouti. Mr. Hassan is qualified as an important element who could infiltrate the Djiboutian and Eritrean Communities in Switzerland and Europe.

Mr.Hassan is believed to provide the Eritrean Embassy some of important or sensitive materials ; but not known specifically what type of sensitive information that he passed on to the Eritrean. Though his main task is to recruit young men and train them in Eritrea for sabotage activities; invasion – then Eritrea will annex Doumera and more Djiboutian territories in return.

1-	Se venger de Hassan Cher Hared suite au nouvelle échec que le régime djiboutien a récolté le 25 Avril 2013 à l’examen périodique universel du conseil des droits de l’homme de l’ONU à Genève ;

Hassan Cher Hared

Secrétaire général de l’UDDESC

Adan Barre Hiiraale (left) and Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe)

MOGADISHU (AFP) — A warlord in southern Somalia’s Jubaland has declared himself “president” of the region, clan leaders said Thursday, shortly after the election of another militia commander to the post.

With tensions already high, the move raised the risk of clashes between rival factions in the southern port city of Kismayo, a former stronghold of the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab, where Kenyan troops in an African Union force are now based.

The city was quiet Thursday, but residents have reported clan militia reinforcing their positions across Kismayo.

On Wednesday, former Islamist warlord Ahmed Madobe was elected Jubaland’s “president” by a conference of some 500 elders and local leaders.

Neither the title nor the region itself is recognised by the weak central government in Mogadishu.

His supporters — including the powerful Ras Kamboni militia — fired heavy machine guns into the sky to celebrate his appointment, residents said.

“They were firing guns late into the night…the situation is calm now but the city is tense, there are fears of clashes between militia,” Kismayo resident Hassan Mohamud told AFP.

Madobe is a key ally of Kenya, and his appointment risks opening a rift between Nairobi and Mogadishu.

But shortly afterwards, former Somali defence minister and warlord Barre Hirale, who comes from a rival clan, declared himself also president after a separate conference.

“I was nominated president of Jubaland by the elders…I call on the people to support my presidency to assist me in bringing peace,” Hirale told reporters.

“The conference where I was nominated was organised and belonged to the people… while the other conference was organised and pushed by Kenya,” he added, calling on people “to lay down their arms and help rebuild the region.”

Hirale, a veteran militia commander from the Marehan clan, has in recent years been backed by Ethiopia to battle Shebab insurgents.

Both elections are understood to be opposed by the central government in the capital Mogadishu, which is keen to stamp its authority on the lawless and war-ravaged nation, not to see further regional splits.

There was no immediate reaction to developments from Mogadishu.

“If fighting breaks out in Kismayo, it will be the Somali government that will take responsibility for the bloodshed, because they are creating instability between brotherly clans,” Madobe told reporters.

Residents in Kismayo said they now had two leaders.

“Today we have two presidents, and one of them is aided by Kenya’s army…the city is quiet but people are not moving in the streets as they are worried,” Kismayo resident Ahmed Ali said Thursday.

“Clan militia supporting either side are reinforcing their positions across the town,” he told AFP by telephone.

Jubaland lies in the far south of Somalia and borders both Kenya and Ethiopia, and control is split between multiple forces including clan militia, the Shebab, Kenyan and Ethiopian soldiers.

Jubaland joins other semi-autonomous regions of the fractured Horn of Africa nation, including Puntland in the northeast — which wants autonomy within a federation of states — and Somaliland in the northwest, which fiercely defends its self-declared independence.

Invading Kenyan troops — now part of the AU force mandated to support the government in Mogadishu — captured Kismayo alongside Madobe’s troops in October 2012.

Madobe, from Somalia’s Ogadeni clan, was once governor of Kismayo and a key member of the Islamic Courts Union — whose armed wing was the Shebab — that was toppled by Ethiopia’s 2006 US-backed invasion of Somalia.

During the invasion he was wounded in a bombing raid in southern Somalia, and was captured and taken to Ethiopia, spending at least two years in jail.

After his release, in late 2011 he switched allegiance to battle his former Islamist comrades by fighting alongside Kenyan troops.

Saylac & Lughaya State Of Somalia

We regret to inform the Citizens of Saylac & Lughaya that, Mr. Hassan Cher Hared, the former member of the senate or Guurtii of SLSS, sadly started undermining the State: he changed the password of the official web site of Saylac and Lughaya State, without the knowledge of the executive office.

Furthermore, Mr. Cher also accused the President Mahad of abusing his power – and to make matter worse, he shamefully posted it on Facebook – simply he did not like the recent government reshuffling of the Guurti and the Cabinet members.

If he or anyone else for that matter, has a grievance with a member of the government of Saylac and Lughaya State, has a legal procedure to fellow, though, dictated by our constitution.

Why then, Mr. Cher did not go through our legal system in place or put his case in front of our elders if he has a problem; instead of embarrassing our people – the Issa nation publicly.

We believe Mr. Hassan Cher owe an apology to our President and the entire Issa nation wherever they might be. And we respectfully ask our brother to hand over the password of the web site to the government officials within 24 hrs.

Saylac and Lughaya State
Office of the Press Secretary,

Life slips away second by second. Are you aware that every day brings you closer to death or that death is as close to you as it is to other people?

As we are told in the verse “Every soul shall taste death in the end; to Us shall you be brought back.” (Surat al-’Ankabut: 57) everyone who has ever appeared on this earth was destined to die. Without exception they all died, every one. Today, we hardly come across the traces of many of these people who passed away. Those currently living and those who will ever live will also face death on a predestined day. Despite this fact, people tend to see death as an unlikely incident.

Think of a baby who has just opened its eyes to the world and a man who is about to breathe his last. Both had no influence on their individual birth or death whatsoever. Only God possesses the power to inspire the breath of life or to take it away.

All human beings will live until a certain day and then die; God in the Qur’an gives an account of the attitude commonly shown towards death in the following verse:

Say: “The death from which you flee will truly overtake you: then you will be sent back to the Knower of things secret and open: and He will tell you (the truth of) the things that you did!” (Surat al-Jumu’ah:

The majority of people avoid thinking about death. In the rapid flow of daily events, a person usually occupies himself with totally different subjects: what college to enroll in, which company to work for, what color of clothing to wear next morning, what to cook for supper; these are the kinds of major issues that we usually consider. Life is perceived as a routine process of such minor matters. Attempts to talk about death are always interrupted by those who do not feel comfortable hearing about it. Assuming death will come only when one grows older, one does not want to concern himself with such an unpleasant subject. Yet it should be kept in mind that living for even one further hour is never guaranteed. Everyday, man witnesses the deaths of people around him but thinks little about the day when others will witness his own death. He never supposes that such an end is awaiting him!

Nevertheless, when death comes to man, all the “realities” of life suddenly vanish. No reminder of the “good old days” endures in this world. Think of everything that you are able to do right now: you can blink your eyes, move your body, speak, laugh; all these are functions of your body. Now think about the state and shape your body will assume after your death.

From the moment you breathe for the last time, you will become nothing but a “heap of flesh”. Your body, silent and motionless, will be carried to the morgue. There, it will be washed for the last time. Wrapped in a shroud, your corpse will be carried in a coffin to the graveyard. Once your remains are in the grave, soil will cover you. This is the end of your story. From now on, you are simply one of the names represented in the graveyard by a marble stone.

During the first months or years, your grave will be visited frequently. As time passes, fewer people will come. Decades later, there will be no-one.

Meanwhile, your immediate family members will experience a different aspect of your death. At home, your room and bed will be empty. After the funeral, little of what belongs to you will be kept at home: most of your clothes, shoes, etc, will be given to those who need them. Your file at the public registration office will be deleted or archived. During the first years, some will mourn for you. Yet, time will work against the memories you left behind. Four or five decades later, there will remain only a few who remember you. Before long, new generations will come and none of your generation will exist any longer on earth. Whether you are remembered or not will be worthless to you.

While all this is taking place in the world, the corpse under the soil will go through a rapid process of decay. Soon after you are placed in the grave, the bacteria and insects proliferating in the corpse due to the absence of oxygen will start to function. The gasses released from these organisms will inflate the body, starting from the abdomen, altering its shape and appearance. Bloody froth will pop out the mouth and nose due to the pressure of gasses on the diaphragm. As corruption proceeds, body hair, nails, soles, and palms will fall off. Accompanying this outer alteration in the body, internal organs such as lungs, heart and liver will also decay. In the meantime, the most horrible scene takes place in the abdomen, where the skin can no longer bear the pressure of gasses and suddenly bursts, spreading an unendurably disgusting smell. Starting from the skull, muscles will detach from their particular places. Skin and soft tissues will completely disintegrate. The brain will decay and start looking like clay. This process will go on until the whole body is reduced to a skeleton.

There is no chance of going back to the old life again. Gathering around the supper table with family members, socializing or to having an honorable job will never again be possible.

In short, the “heap of flesh and bones” to which we assign an identity faces a quite nasty end. On the other hand, you – or rather, your soul – will leave this body as soon as you breathe your last. The remainder of you – your body – will become part of the soil.

Yes, but what is the reason for all these things happening?

If God willed, the body would never have decayed in such a way. That it does so actually carries a very important inner message in itself.

The tremendous end awaiting man should make him acknowledge that he is not a body himself, but a soul “encased” within a body. In other words, man has to acknowledge that he has an existence beyond his body. Furthermore, man should understand the death of his body which he tries to possess as if he is to remain eternally in this temporal world. However this body, which he deems so important, will decay and become worm-eaten one day and finally be reduced to a skeleton. That day might be very soon.

Despite all these facts, man’s mental process is inclined to disregard what he does not like or want. He is even inclined to deny the existence of things he avoids confronting. This tendency seems to be most apparent when death is the issue. Only a funeral or the sudden death of an immediate family member brings this reality to mind. Almost everybody sees death far from himself. The assumption is that those who die while sleeping or in an accident are different people and what they face will never befall us! Everybody thinks it is too early to die and that there are always years ahead to live.

Yet most probably, people who die on the way to school or hurrying to attend a business meeting shared the same thought. They probably never thought that the next day’s newspapers would publish news of their deaths. It is entirely possible that, as you read these lines, you still do not expect to die soon after you have finished them or even entertain the possibility that it might happen. Probably you feel that it is too early to die because there are many things to accomplish. However, this is just an avoidance of death and these are only vain endeavors to escape it:

Say: “Running away will not profit you if you are running away from death or slaughter; and even if (you do escape), no more than a brief (respite) will you be allowed to enjoy!”(Surat al-Ahzab: 16)

Man who is created alone should be aware that he will also die alone. Yet during his life, he lives almost addicted to possessions. His sole purpose in life becomes to possess more. Yet, no-one can take his goods with him to the grave. The body is buried wrapped in a shroud made from the cheapest of fabrics. The body comes into this world alone and departs from it in the same way. The only asset one can take with him when one dies is one’s belief or disbelief.

“Murtada. R. I”
